Western Alliance for Nature Fundraiser for Storm-Petrel Conservation
The Western Alliance for Nature is sponsoring an expedition to find the nesting sites of the Markham’s Storm-petrel.
The Markham’s Storm-petrel (Oceanodroma markhami) is a species endemic to the Humboldt Current, which flows off the coasts of Peru and northern Chile. Very little is known about its reproductive biology. The Markham’s Storm-petrel is classified as Data Deficient by the IUCN, due to the lack of knowledge regarding their nesting sites and nonexistence of estimations of its reproductive population.

Featured guest Speaker will be Peter Harrison who is widely considered one of the world’s foremost seabird experts. He has written and illustrated more than a dozen books, of which Seabirds: An Identification Guide, first published in 1983, is still regarded as the standard reference work on the world’s 350 or so seabird species.
Peter has led scientific research expeditions throughout the world, from the Arctic to the Antarctic and across the islands of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. He was the leader of a recent six-person international expedition to locate, catch and describe the Pincoya Storm Petrel, the first completely new storm petrel species to be discovered in nearly 100 years.
Peter’s illustrated presentation promises to be an inspirational evening for sea bird enthusiasts as well as all lovers of the winged wonders of Nature.
